To write a press release is really very simple. All you have to do is fill in the blanks and think like a reporter.

  1. separate real news about your company from promotions
  2. deliver something of interest
  3. and deliver it professionally and in a courteous way.

  1. Reporters don't care about helping you.
  2. Reporters are harassed all day by people and are sick of it.
  3. Reporters don't care about your website, your book, product or your life story...

Unless...you are providing them with a work free interesting newsworthy story that they do not have to rewrite.

NOW you have their attention and they have an interest.

Write a Press Release designed specifically to provide a newsworthy element to your story. Message boards, surveys, chat rooms, feedback pages that can lead to publicity. Especially if you are an offline business. A survey about your product or service would be good-- people love to give their opinion and their opinion could be news.

Your product or service could possibly be a health issue which is always news.

Press Releases are an important part of marketing and a release that is well written will be noticed.

It is important that a release supply the answer to potential questions about your service or product.

  • what
  • when
  • where
  • why
  • how
  • Be concise and to the point. A release longer than two pages will probably not be read. 400 to 500 words is acceptable.

    City - Release - Date - This paragraph answers the questions. This is an important paragraph. Be specific and clear about the subject of the release.

    The rest of the release is facts about the service or product. It can contain the capabilities of your product or service. You must be honest and factual with your claims and statements. Provide credible information and to the point.

    When describing your product or service remember "Feature, Function and Benefits". What is it, what does it do and how will it benefit the user.

    The closing paragraph should be about your company and the industry it serves.

    You need to provide contact information, name, phone number, email address and Web address.
